The two main umbrellas of treatments are relaxation massage and therapeutic massage.

The primary goal of relaxation massage is to promote relaxation and stress reduction. Soothing movements are used in a rhythmic fashion and usually light to moderate pressure is applied. Generally a full body treatment is done, however you may request only certain areas (for example, only upper body).

Therapeutic massage focuses on a specific complaint such as an injury or pain. A variety of techniques may be used depending on your needs, therapist training, and preferences. Techniques include kneading and compressions, trigger point therapy, facilitated stretching, deep tissue massage, soft tissue release, sports massage, myofascial release, nerve flossing, and joint mobilizations.

Melissa Pierson graduated with honours in 2009 from the 2,200-hour program at CCMH Foothills College of Massage Therapy. She was also chosen to be the valedictorian of her graduating class. Her courses focused on anatomy and physiology, pathology, advanced massage treatments, hydrotherapy, and biomechanics. In 2011, Melissa published an award winning case study in the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork on the effects of massage therapy on Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction symptoms. She has also completed advanced training on assessing and treating the TMJ. Prenatal massage, pediatric massage, and working with postural problems are also of interest to Melissa. She treats a wide range of conditions with the skills she has obtained in therapeutic and relaxation massage and structures treatments specific to each patient’s needs.

Melissa is a member in good standing with the Massage Therapy Association of Alberta. When she joined this association it was the only association in Alberta that required an entrance exam which included a comprehensive written and hands-on component. The MTAA holds their members to high standards of practice and requires continued education, first aid training, and a criminal record check with vulnerable sectors.
